An event of this importance needs to be recognised in many ways and it is entirely appropriate that a historian of the standing of Bro. James Hagerty KSG BA MA MPhil PhD FRHistS FRSA has written a new history of the Association.
Entitled The Catenian Association: A Centenary History 1908-2008, publication coincided with The Centenary Conference.
We include some extracts from the book’s dust jacket:
“The Chums were similar to many friendly societies formed before the First World War but their exclusivity led to them being compared to the Freemasons”
“The exclusion of priests from the Association also gave rise to suspicion”
In Summary “This book traces the history of the Catenian Association from its origins in the Catholic heartland of Lancashire to the present day. It shows how the original mission of the founders has been maintained and how generations of Catenians and their families have generously contributed to the growth and development of their faith and civic communities.“ This will be a must read for all Catenians. In addition, a new biography of Bishop Casartelli, who inspired our founding fathers, has been written by Fr. Martin John Broadley, a priest of the Salford Diocese. While it does not deal with the development of the Association, it contains much background material on the status of Catholics within the social context of the UK before the First World War and the events which led to the establishment of "The Chums", shortly afterwards to be known as The Catenian Association. Published by Koinonia Books, 70 Sandown Road, Bury, Lancs BL9 8HW at a cost of £15.95 plus £1.25 p&p.
